A Jest Of God :: essays research papers
A Jest of God We were strangers from the beginning tormented by our difference which did not exist. (Betsy Warland) An important ingredient inherent in a successful mother-daughter relationship is balance. Like the scales of justice, maintaining equilibrium requires work. The special bond between mother and daughter is delicate and unlike any other relationship due to expectations of performance on behalf of both women. The female psyche is, characteristically, particular: each woman having a certain regiment making themselves unique. Ideals and behavior learned, possibly inherited, from others are two of many things which carve an individual's personality. It is these similarities and differences which often cause conflicts between mother and daughter. In A Jest of God, the relationship between Rachel and her mother is strained due to unspoken expectations that each had of the other. Stemming from poor communication, a host of differences were assumed to exist between the two, when in fact their struggle originated in their sameness. The largest weapon which spear-headed the communication war between Rachel and her mother was the generation gap; coming from different eras, the pair assumed they had nothing in common. In Rachel's eyes her mother was a pristine, saintly woman who maintained high moral values for herself and her family. Therefore, being a good person and making the right decisions was never questionable to Rachel, as this was how her mother expected her to behave. Rachel listened numerous times to her mother comment on how "peculiar" her behavior looked, and spoke of anyone else she observed doing the same. Although this annoyed Rachel about her mother, she adopted similar paranoia tendencies, speculating how her behavior with Nick, a summer beau, looked to anyone who could be watching or noticing. Irritated by her mother's attitude, Rachel excused it on the pretense that her views reflected the past times in which she lived. However, Rachel had neither the patience nor the desire to speak out against her mother for fear of stirring trouble between them. The irony in Rachel's decision is that their relationship needed just what she was so desperately trying to avoid. By turning her back on the communication problem between herself and her mother, Rachel wanted to believe that the problem was inherent in the misunderstanding each had of the other. Underneath her shell, Rachel was coming to terms with what was really true of the gap between herself and her mother: their difference lay in her want to not be similar. Both were single: Rachel unmarried and her mother a widow. Through her fling with Nick, Rachel wanted to express her desires to be independent from her mother, and have an adult

Enter the Void Film Review
Enter If You Must A testament of cinematic genius, a daring and psychedelic composition, an adventure through reality and the afterlife: Enter the Void is unlike any movie one has seen or probably will see in the future. Written and directed by the Frenchman Gaspar Noe, Enter the Void is a complex film that constantly experiments with the directorââ¬â¢s unique visual style. Enter the Void follows the tragic story of a young American drug dealer, Oscar, as he struggles to survive in the neon-lit and chaotic streets of Tokyo. Early in the film, Oscar is shot and killed in a drug bust gone wrong. The rest of the film is captured from the perspective of Oscarââ¬â¢s spirit, as he revisits important moments of his past and watches over his loved ones. Enter the Void challenges all theories about life and death, explores the world of drugs and sex, and reaffirms the true value of a brother and sister relationship. However, what makes Enter the Void especially distinct is that the camer a only shoots through the first-person perspective of Oscar, as we watch everything through his eyes. Noeââ¬â¢s commitment to presenting the whole film through Oscarââ¬â¢s perspective dates back to films such as Robert Montgomeryââ¬â¢s Lady in the Lake.Noe is able to effectively bring the audience into Oscarââ¬â¢s conscience with this camera technique, and the detail makes the film all a more fascinating experience. Throughout the film, Noe consciously alters the POV-style of the camera to represent different stages of the characterââ¬â¢s life. When Oscar is alive, the camera is strictly through his viewpoint, and we are reminded he is alive from his eyes blinking on the screen. This POV-style allows us to get to know Oscar on a very personal level, as his every action and thoughts are always seen by the audience from a perspective they are used to seeing their own life from. When Oscar dies, Noe changes the camera to an over-the-shoulder shot, and all we can see is th e back of Oscarââ¬â¢s head. This POV-style allows the audience to revisit moments of Oscarââ¬â¢s past from a different perspective, one that is uninviting, but it also allows the audience to finally be able to care for a character who they can see visibly. Eventually, Noe removes Oscarââ¬â¢s silhouette from view, and the camera hovers like a ghost over Tokyo in a fantastic out-of-body visual display. The swooping and soaring camerawork perfectly transcribes the feeling of Oscarââ¬â¢s spirit flying through the luorescent lights and towering skyscrapers on the Tokyo skyline. There is a dreamlike quality to this camera view, and Noe masterfully mesmerizes the audience with a psychedelic display of colors, lights, and movement. The different POV-styles of the camera are definitely an important tool that constantly reminds the audience what stage they are following Oscar in: Life, death, or in his memories. Without a doubt, Enter the Void courageously experiments with camera perspective, and Noe is able to create an exciting visual experience for the audience, while telling his story in a non-traditional manner.Enter the Void is not only remarkable for its daring first-person perspective camera work, but Gaspar Noeââ¬â¢s brilliant use of computer-generated imagery allows him to visually synthesize the sex, drugs, and violence of this film, into a complex masterpiece. Noe is able to create a visual beauty and sense of spirituality through the help of computer-generated imagery, even allowing the audience to share Oscarââ¬â¢s experience hallucinating after smoking DMT. Noe experimented with hallucinogens in his youth, and his experiences had a profound influence on the visuals in Enter the Void.He would often reference paintings, photographs, music videos, and other films in order to describe his psychedelic experiences to his design team. As Oscar starts his trip, the screen transforms into a collage of brightly lit shapes and colors. The elaborate designs and images incorporate the audience into Oscarââ¬â¢s character, a lost and troubled youth, and we experience his thoughts and viewpoint first hand. Noe experiments with a new language of film, as the various textures and morphing images he uses are essential in achieving a 3D feeling without any glasses.Noe constantly breaks from the typical conventions of film, as he simultaneously combines experimental visuals with obscure POV-styles. When filming the camera shots hovering over Tokyo, Noe combined studio scenes, helicopter shots, and computer-generated imagery into one so the audience could not tell them apart. The dreamlike world of Enter the Void was achieved by accentuating the neon lights, reflections, and dark areas of Tokyo. Noe even experimented with motion blur, chromatic aberration, and focus effects to create the mysterious flickers that add to Tokyoââ¬â¢s sleazy psychedelic environment at night.Noeââ¬â¢s visuals and unique storytelling methods definite ly show similarities to his favorite film, 2001: A Space Odyssey. The light corridor scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey clearly influenced Gaspar Noe, as Noe re-creates the same feelings of amazement and mystery that come from special effects, camera movement, and lighting. Noeââ¬â¢s work has also been compared to Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke, as they both have created experimental works that distort the formal elements of film, often in a frustrating, cruel, and provocative way.Enter the Void is effectively able to draw the audience into the film through personal relationships with the characters, but it is the filmââ¬â¢s fascinating use of visuals and CGI that makes it hold meaning with the audience on a spiritually mesmerizing level. Overall, Enter the Void is a phenomenal work that recognizes the experimental side of film, as it combines an unconventional plot, daring POV-styles, and outstanding computer-generated imagery.Gaspar Noe masterfully combines digital effects wi th unique cinematic techniques, and as a result Enter the Void is a mind-altering experience that constantly challenges our theories on life, death, and the spiritual. Noe breaks away from the usual conventions of film, and this gives him the freedom to embrace his creativity, and follow his true passions. Enter the Void will surely take one on a captivating journey through hell and back, but more importantly it will open oneââ¬â¢s eyes to how a director can expand the possibilities of film.

How Social Media has a bad effect on Society
As we approach 2014 social media has been very advantageous communicating tool for people of all ages to use. However behind closed doors social media is strangling the life out of the younger generation. Now of course I do not mean this literally, and in many ways sites like Facebook and Twitter promote to teenagers about making friends and widening their friend circles which is excellent-in theory. This has in my opinion got out of hand and scientists have been able to come up new psychological evidence that shows that teenagers have increased aggression in their moods and lack of empathy which increases the possibility of schizophrenia and depression. Most teenagers I talk to say that they canââ¬â¢t imagine a world without social media and an astounding 96% of people have at one point signed up to one of these sites. The newly discovered FoMo syndrome has come hand in hand with the social media craze, which is the Fear of Missing out. This syndrome means that people are glued ont o their social media sites constantly refreshing the pages because they are so afraid of missing out on something important or interesting. Arguably the biggest problem with Social Media is Cyberbullying. This is not your average school bullying in the sense it can be controlled by people, on social networking sites bullies donââ¬â¢t get told off by anyone or restricted by anyone and can continue as they see fit. Another difficulty with online bullying is that the attacker can hide behind their computer and are shadowed by this.A lot of people would not have the courage to say things in person to one another but on Facebook people seem to be more outgoing and some completely have a change of personality and become a lot more confident. Ask. fm over the last year has been linked to 9 cyberbullying evoked suicides and has been the centre of many petitions about the site being taken down. On this site people can anonymously ask questions to the user for them to be answered and poste d, which seems innocent and funny. Disgusting, vile teenagers have been abusing users on Ask. fm anonymously though and this is what has driven 9 people to take their own lives.Personally I believe that this site should be taken down immediately and save users from the torment of faceless bullies. ââ¬ËSextingââ¬â¢ is another online craze at the moment throughout Social Networking. This is when two people engage in a sexually explicit conversation or send sexually explicit photos via Facebook or a new phenomenon Snapchat. Immature teens do not know the risks of this however and do not realise that as a result of their actions a message or photo could fall into the wrong hands and could jeopardise the reputation or perhaps the future of the individual.Stalkers and predators are known to be highly common on Social Networking sites as it is an easy way to search and track anybody in the world. To add to all these valid points comes possibly one of the most appreciated of all which is time; Social Networking for me and for millions of teenagers all over the world one of the biggest time wasters in modern day society. For example whilst revising for a test I will dedicate the night before to learn, whilst in absolute concentration though a ââ¬ËPINGââ¬â¢ will sound from my phone resting nest to me and I unavoidably check to see what it was.Half an hour later I think to myself ââ¬ËOh My God, Iââ¬â¢ve wasted the whole of prep. ââ¬â¢ Events like these happen daily. On the other hand along with all this negativity social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and twitter show that people are brought together and that these sites are there for old friends to reunite and catch-up via private message. In conclusion, Social Networking sites are meant for all kinds of social behaviour essentially but in my opinion it has definitely become out of hand and I can only see these problems getting worse and worse.
